This will be a fun and playful exploration of a very important aspect of Nia, called Free Dance. The intent of this playshop is to demystify the process of Free Dancing. As a participant you will gain tools to guide yourself, or to lead a group of people, in a Free Dance experience.
Free Dance is a rich and exciting opportunity to express ourselves by moving our bodies. One of the things that separates Nia from many other forms of fitness is the degree of personal freedom. People often leave class remembering that part the most. I consider Free Dance to be the most spiritual aspect of Nia. Through this playshop, you’ll gain a distinct understanding of the chemistry and energy of Free Dance, and learn many tools and techniques to practice a full, rich Free Dance which you can use to energize yourself and to always dance to suit your style and mood at any given time.
The unstructured nature and palpable energy of Free Dance can be intimidating. Some people shut down and barely move, or worse, go grab a sip of water instead of participating in what could be the most exciting and deeply gratifying moment of class.
As a teacher, I see people who are concerned because they “don’t know what to do” and maybe they’re afraid of looking silly. This playshop is designed to inspire you and expand your Free Dance by demystifying the whole process. We’ll be removing blockages and opening up new pathways of creative exploration. I will take us step by step through an inspirational method of creating your own style and your own Free Dance. You’ll never again wonder what to do when it’s time to dance.
By the end of this playshop you will have a grab bag of different Free Dances and you'll be able to energize any of your dancing with spontaneous, rich, varied movements with passionate energy.
This playshop also offers an added opportunity for any student interested; to guide the group in a Free Dance. The skill of guiding a group in a Free Dance experience is really nothing more than applying the tools of Free Dance that I'll teach in the playshop, and then Teaching What You Sense. I'll break down everything you need to start leading dynamic spontaneous movement experiences.
Come and unleash your inner dancer!
The playshop is $29. It will be held at a dance studio near Broadway and Canal St. As always, JAGfit class members pay only $9.
